Newest Recall to the Hyundai Elantra
March 2, 2020 9:20 pm Leave your thoughtsFirst launched in 1990, when the mid-sized sedan ruled the world, the Elantra has remained a staple of South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai’s lineup since it hit the market. Thirty years and three new models later, the Elantra remains a frequent sight on the road in Utah and the rest of the United States. As with nearly every vehicle on the market, however, the Elantra’s design isn’t perfect.
As of early February 2020, a Hyundai Elantra recall in Salt Lake City, UT has gone into effect.
An ABS issue
Over the course of the last two years, engineers at Hyundai have researched a problem with the Elantra’s anti-lock brake system (ABS). After a consumer complaint in October of 2017, the car manufacturer began investigating an issue wherein moisture would seep into the Elantra’s ABS’ electrical wiring. After a while, the moisture would build up and cause a short in the system that would erupt in flames.
Though this newest recall has impacted nearly 430,000 Hyundai Elantras across the United States, the car company says that the issue has resulted in no reported injuries.
A “superficial” repair
In spite of identifying the error (and issuing a recall), it may turn off potential new buyers. This is the second major flaw that has been noticed in the fourth-model Hyundai Elantra. Years ago, the manufacturer saw an issue that caused the mechanism that triggered the Elantra’s brake lights to fail.
What’s more, some experts believe the latest fix to be far from permanent. The recall won’t fix the solution outright. It will, instead, see a relay installed in the car’s ABS wiring that is intended to prevent any issues while the car is turned off. The real issue here is that the problem may persist when the vehicle is started.
That said, whenever a manufacturer issues a recall, it is imperative that you have it fixed as soon as possible for the safety of both you and your passengers.
