Top Tips for Fast Fixes!July 22, 2019 10:51 pm Leave your thoughts
Regardless of how safely you drive or how often you bring your car to an auto mechanic in Salt Lake City, UT for a tune-up, your vehicle is bound to run into some issues once in a while. The good news is that you don’t have to be a trained mechanic to fix some of these small problems. Keep reading to learn a few tips for quick repairs and maintenance items you can likely handle by yourself:
- Oil: The frequency at which your oil needs to be changed depends on the kind of car you drive and the oil you use, but most vehicles require an oil change every 5,000 miles or so. The good news is that changing your oil isn’t all that hard. Simply unscrew the drain plug and drain the old oil, replace the plug and fill the engine with new oil.
- Coolant: Changing your coolant on time is almost as important as changing your oil. Driving on worn coolant is a surefire way to ruin your radiator, heater core and water pump. Coolant lasts longer than oil—it should be changed every 24,000 miles, or every 100,000 miles if you have extended-life coolant. Like oil, all you have to do is drain the old stuff and fill the radiator back up with fresh coolant.
- Battery maintenance: If you’ve ever seen an old car battery, you may have noticed white, crusty gunk covering the battery terminals. This residue is caused by battery acid, and it needs to be removed if you want your battery to function properly. Cleaning this junk off just requires a battery cleaning solution (which can be found at any auto store) and a wire brush. Remove the posts from the battery terminals, dip them in the solution and start scrubbing until the white stuff is gone. Rinse and dry them before putting them back in the battery, and you’re all done!
- Spark plugs: At first thought, changing spark plugs might seem like a daunting challenge that only a trained pro should handle, but that’s not the case. This is actually a fairly straightforward procedure that you can do as long as you have a socket wrench. Locate your spark plugs—you either have four, six, or eight depending on your engine—remove them one by one, and replace them with new ones. Your spark plugs must be arranged in a certain order, so be sure to place the right one in the correct space.
